Find: Buffalo hunting; buffalo hunting in Texas and buffalo hunting all over the United States:
No one really knows for sure when buffalo hunting began in North
America. What is known is that the vast brown wave of American bison
that thundered across the landscape prior to the westward settlement
dissappeared. In fact, the American bison was reduced from an estimated
40 million animals to a mere 500 animals by the year 1889. Thanks to
the efforts of many including state legislation, private entities and
ranchers, there are now an estimated 350,000 buffalo in North America
today. This reinvestment in the well being of the buffalo has allowed
buffalo hunting to once again be enjoyed by many. Today, there is
buffalo hunting in Texas, South and North Dakota and many, many states
in between. These buffalo hunts take place primarily on private ranches
that are both fenced and unfenced and go a long way in authenticating
buffalo hunting of years gone by. Many hunters opt to use a gun or
caliber of rifle that is complimentary to the ones used back during the
buffalo hunting days. Calibers like the 45/70 in makes like the Shiloh
Sharps rifle are often used to re enact the buffalo hunt of years past.
Most of the buffalo hunting outfitters today harvest only trophy class
bulls that will weigh up tp 2,000 pounds. Many of the hunts are not
simply herd hunts but fair chase hunts done on thousands of acres of
free ranging land. Buffalo hunting can now be enjoyed by those who
desire to do so, and although the American bison will never number so
many as to stagger the imagination as they once did, they are as much a
part of the American West as the cowboy or the locomotive and hopefully
will endure forever.
