The black tailed deer is a species of deer found in western North America. Blacktailed deer hunting is enjoyed by sportsmen throughout the west. The black tailed deer is considered by many to be a sub species of the mule deer. There are two sub species of black tailed deer; the Columbian and the Sitka. The balck tailed deer is smaller than either the mule deer or the whitetailed deer and their antlers are forked in pairs like the mule deer. The blacktailed deer ranges throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. The Sitka blacktail deer is smaller than the Columbian and is found primarily in Southeast Alaska, northern British Columbia and on Kodiak and Afognok islands. Throughout much of the Sitka blacktail range, hunting pressure has little effect on the population, but harsh winters have been known to decimate the herds. The Sitka blacktail, like all members of the deer family, have a high reproductive potential and will recover quickly from winter die offs. The Columbia blacktail is larger than her Sitka cousin and a mature buck may weigh up to 250 lbs. Blacktail deer hunting is very challenging and takes place in some of the most beautiful places on the continent. For the hunter wanting to the challenge of hunting a deer with the best of both the whitetail and mule deer, the blacktailed deer is it. The bottom two thirds of the tail is black... hence the name balcktail.
