Colorado Unit 85/851 2nd Season Private Land Tag:
This landowner tag can be used on private ground in Colorado unit 85 and Colorado unit 851.
Access is granted to the ranch the tag is issued on but you can utilize on any other private ranch in area 85/851 that you gain permission from the landowner(s). The 230-acre ranch is adjacent to a road thus allowing easier access for hunters and there is little to no traffic on the road. Hunters can expect to see several deer and possibly an occasional elk throughout the season. The elk receive a good amount of pressure during the season and often find their way onto private parcels such as this ranch.
The rancher is an experienced hunter and will be pleased to point you in the right direction to begin your hunt.
Colorado Unit 85/851 Hunt Dates:Hunt dates are October 19 - 27 2019
Colorado Unit 85/851 Trophy Deer:The Mule Deer in unit 85 Colorado average 140" to 160" with trophy potential often over the 170" mark and the occasional 180+ buck. Basically, every unit in Colorado produces a few bucks over the 190 B&C score but those are rare in any game management unit.
Youth, Elderly, Mobility Impaired:This hunt is on private land and the ranch is a perfect place to take your elderly dad, a youth or a mobility impaired hunter. Elk tags for the 2nd season in unit 85 are over the counter so you could team up with a friend and one hunt deer and the other elk. Although the ranch is not set up for a mobility impaired hunter the terrain is moderate and affords good access.
Colorado Unit 85/851 Combination Elk/Deer Hunt:Hunters wishing to do a combination hunt could hunt the private land for deer and elk then venture out onto the national forest that is conveniently located a few miles away
There are some meadows that offer a great place to sit and wait on a deer and/or elk. The ranch is near the end of the public road. The property offers good access to the private as well as being located near the San Isabel National Forest.
Colorado Unit 85/851 Kill Success Rate:Hunter Success Rate: The last 5 years 2nd season harvest has exceeded 50% several times and over 60% in 2017. This speaks volumes for hunters as many areas of Colorado are closer to 20% success rates.
If a hunter chooses to do a combination elk/deer hunt the 2nd season tag is over the counter of elk.
Colorado Unit 85 Elk Hunt: Unit 85 and unit 851 Colorado offers bulls from 250" up to the occasional 300" Boone and Crockett bull. The bull to cow ratio is estimated to be 21 bull elk to 100 cow elk.
