Terrain: The elevation in this area can range from 4570 along the Dores river to 10388 at the summit of Horsefly peak. In elevations at 6500 or below, you will be in a more high desert plant community. Important plant species include but are not limited to black sagebrush, winterfat, four wing saltbrush, shadescale saltbrush, broom snakeweed, greasewood, black brush and rabbitbrush. In the higher elevations the terrain is more covered in pinon pine, juniper woodlands, grassland, shrubs, black sagebrush, indian whitegrass. The pinon juniper covers around 40 percent of this unit. Numerous roads provide easy access but most canyons are only accessible by foot or by horseback.
Hunting Tips: Hunters are recommended to hunt at higher elevations, mostly in the early seasons. Those who do venture into the toucher canyon terrain could be highly rewarded though. Be sure to stay on the public lands in the canyon area. Hunters should stay away from most roads.
Experience: One of the best Elk units in the west with the genetics to prove it. Hunt the plateau famous for them. Unit 61 Colorado is one of the top units in the west to find your next 200" trophy elk. 2nd season assures you will be on the ground when the weather is good and trophy elks just over the next hill.
